About Us

Regional Medical Programs and Rural Health (RMP), a unit housed within the Office of Community Health and Service (OCHAS), is responsible for building relationships and developing and implementing programs in fulfillment of the School of Medicine’s community service mission throughout its 66-county mission area in central and southern Illinois. To better meet this responsibility, RMP recently opened two rural, regional offices. The West Central regional office is located on the campus of Mason District Hospital in Havana. The Southeast Central regional office is located on the campus of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.

Each region consists of 20 counties and is managed by an Assistant Director for Regional Medical Programs and Rural Health. The Assistant Directors will continuously improve the School of Medicine’s understanding of the health care system and the status of health in their respective regions. They are responsible for developing relationships with health care leaders, community leaders, social service agencies, and economic development leaders within their regions. The two rural regional sites complement the efforts of the Center for Rural Health and Social Service Development, located on the SIU Carbondale Campus with responsibilities for the southernmost 22 counties in Illinois.

Rural Health Initiative

The Rural Health Initiative is a major component of the School of Medicine's outreach efforts to assist rural and underserved areas in central and southern Illinois with increasing access to healthcare services, improving local healthcare infrastructure and identifying educational opportunities for medical students focused upon rural experiences. In its 20 years of existence, the Rural Health Initiative has worked with hospitals, federally qualified health centers, departments of public health, mental health centers, local planning groups and a variety of other entities, both public and private, to define local needs and identify solutions.

The RHI is administered by the Office of Community Health and Service.
